FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Sidamo Region

Ethiopian coffee is highly regarded in the coffee world, especially among Chinese coffee enthusiasts who are familiar with three famous regions: Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. The Sidama administrative province includes two extremely famous coffee-producing areas: Yirgacheffe and Kochere.

The Sidamo region is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture dominates the local economy. Coffee growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley. The largest town in Sidama province is Hawassa, which serves as an important coffee export and distribution center.

Sidamo's coffee flavors are incredibly diverse due to different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties. This results in each town and area producing coffee with distinct differences and characteristics. Ardi, located in Guji, Oromia region in the south, borders Sidama and Gedeo.

Guji Zone

The Guji Zone has been a region worthy of significant attention, and its development in recent years has confirmed that the rise of the Guji region is indeed one of the important trends in Ethiopia's recent development. In addition to coffee beans from larger subregions such as Hambela and Shakiso, excellent beans from processing plants and even single estates have emerged, surpassing what traditional Yirgacheffe regions can offer.

Moreover, in innovative processing methods, there are also honey-processed batches. Besides the recent focus on Gesha Village, the Guji region has also become an important hotspot. To understand Ethiopian trends, Guji can be said to be an essential focus.

Guji

Guji is the highest-quality small subregion in Sidamo, with elevations ranging from 1850 to 2000 meters and abundant natural resources. Coffee from this region has high sweetness, with floral aromas carrying a hint of grassy notes. Natural processed Sidamo tastes similar to floral notes but with slight earthy undertones. Light to medium roasts are suitable for single-origin brewing.

Sidamo green coffee beans have a slightly grayish appearance, with some areas showing larger beans while others show smaller ones. They offer both soft and bright acidity, appropriate body thickness, sweet and spicy aromas, making them one of the garden coffees from Ethiopia's southern highlands. Unlike typical African coffees, Sidamo features clear fruit acidity, smooth texture, and refined floral and herbal aromas.
