FrontStreet Coffee - Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Introduction
Today's undisputed star in the coffee world is undoubtedly Gesha coffee. Amidst the major trend of renowned coffee estates following suit to plant Gesha varieties, Hacienda La Esmeralda—the estate that made Gesha famous overnight at the 2004 BOP coffee competition—still maintains its dominant position today.
However, it is precisely Hacienda La Esmeralda's rigorous and meticulous approach to Gesha coffee that results in every Gesha coffee they produce having a long string of names. For example: Hacienda La Esmeralda Cañas Lot, Montana (Mountain) 601 lot, Red Label Natural Gesha. When faced with such a lengthy name for a Gesha coffee, I believe over 90% of coffee enthusiasts would feel somewhat confused.
So should we really drink such a top-tier coffee, purchased at a high price, with only partial understanding? Or should we not only appreciate its flavor but also fully understand what kind of premium coffee we've actually bought?
What are Red Label and Green Label Gesha?
Red Label and Green Label Gesha are simply Hacienda La Esmeralda's own quality-based classifications for their Gesha coffees. In fact, Hacienda La Esmeralda has four major brands: Esmeralda Special, Geisha Boquete, Diamond Mountain, and Palmyra.
Red Label Gesha refers to Hacienda La Esmeralda's Esmeralda Special—their independently auctioned beans. These are exclusively Gesha varieties, organized by production area names, with each area further subdivided into small lots for auction. Only the Gesha lots that the estate puts forward for independent auction can use the Esmeralda Special designation.
Hacienda La Esmeralda's Gesha offers exceptional flavor, though the price is considerable. Those interested in purchasing can try it through online shopping or visit their store for a tasting. Of course, FrontStreet Coffee has three grades of Gesha and doesn't mind everyone trying them.
