FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda
Located in the Boquete region of Chiriquí Province, Panama, Hacienda La Esmeralda borders the Caribbean Sea to the north and faces the Pacific Ocean to the south. The east-west orientation of Panama allows moist air currents from these two seas to converge on mountains above 6,500 feet after passing through the central mountain range, creating a microclimate highly suitable for coffee cultivation and making this region a kingdom of specialty coffee.
Hacienda La Esmeralda is particularly favored by this microclimate, combined with the fertile soil of the Barú Volcano region, towering terrain, abundant rainfall, and well-preserved primary forests, which further enhances the unique charm and long-lasting aftertaste of La Esmeralda's coffee. Established fifty years ago, Hacienda La Esmeralda now comprises three plots scattered in three directions around the Barú Volcano, each with its own flavor characteristics—mutually watchful yet independent.
The Velo de Novia plot is the newest acquisition of Hacienda La Esmeralda in 2012. Not only is Geisha grown here, but it's also an experimental plot for over 400 coffee varieties at La Esmeralda, including high-quality coffee varieties such as Pacamara, Mocca, and SL28. As part of a longer-term development and exploration plan, Hacienda La Esmeralda hopes to find Geisha's successor varieties from among them.
Velo de Novia is divided into seven small plots: Guabo, Portón, Durazno, Higuerón, Higo, Buena Vista, and Águila.
The name of each small plot here is based on the flavor of the coffee produced or its location. For example, "Higo" translates to "fig" in Spanish because the coffee from this plot has distinct fig notes; the Portón plot is located at the entrance of Velo de Novia, hence named after the Spanish word for "door." Many friends even joke that after tasting Portón's natural-processed Geisha with its exquisite rice wine dry aroma, dark berries, extremely high complexity, and delightful rich sweetness, it's as if opening a "gateway to a flavor feast," leaving an endless aftertaste.
In Hacienda La Esmeralda, each plot division has a specific name rather than a number. This numbering only corresponds to the code for each batch in La Esmeralda's auction, meaning this year's "Washed Plot 1" may not necessarily come from the same plot as last year's "Washed Plot 1."
