Among Brazil's numerous coffee varieties, Yellow Bourbon is one of the most outstanding cultivars. While typical Bourbon cherries turn from green to yellow and then red, Yellow Bourbon cherries remain yellow. When grown at high altitudes and processed using natural sun-drying methods, Yellow Bourbon produces exceptional flavor.
The Bourbon variety originated from Bourbon Island in the Indian Ocean (now known as Réunion Island) and is a sub-species created by mutation from Typica. Like Typica, it belongs to the oldest existing coffee varieties. The green cherries turn bright red when ripe, while Yellow Bourbon resulted from crossing Bourbon with other varieties. Due to its lower yield and relatively poor resistance to wind and rain, it hasn't been widely cultivated. However, when grown at high altitudes, it demonstrates excellent flavor characteristics and has become more common in recent years.
Brazil is the world's largest coffee-producing country, accounting for one-third of global production. Minas Gerais, located in southeastern Brazil, is the core coffee-producing area among Brazil's three major coffee regions, renowned for its professional cultivation, processing techniques, and excellent quality.
The favorable geographical environment and climate, with natural conditions including altitudes above 1,100 meters, average annual temperatures exceeding 21°C, and annual rainfall of 1,800-2,000 millimeters, give the green coffee beans from this region a sweet, slightly acidic taste and a distinctive nutty aroma.
The founder of the Veloso family began domestic coffee trade in 1840, and the business has been passed down through generations for over 150 years. During each harvest season, 300 farmers work across the 135-square-kilometer plantation, creating a spectacular harvesting scene.
