Uganda is a landlocked country located at the source of the Nile River. It has a long history of coffee production, similar to other East African countries. However, due to wars caused by ethnic conflicts, coffee quality could not be improved. It wasn't until 15 years after the war ended that Uganda's coffee industry began to develop rapidly.
If Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica coffee beans, then Uganda is the homeland of Robusta coffee. During the colonial era, encouraged by the British, Uganda began to widely cultivate the low-altitude Robusta species. Today, Uganda has become the world's second-largest Robusta exporter. 85% of the coffee grown in Uganda is Robusta.
Uganda is one of the few countries in the world that can grow both Arabica and Robusta simultaneously, with an environment and climate suitable for coffee cultivation. Uganda is situated at elevations between 900-2000 meters, with annual temperatures maintained between 15°C-28°C. Robusta is typically priced based on sieve size - coffee beans with sieve sizes between 18 and 15 generally have a unique refreshing flavor. Arabica is divided by region: Bugisu, Drugar, and Gemuthindu. The coffee produced in these areas varies slightly but all have moderate fruity acidity.
Robusta is native to Uganda, with two main varieties: 'Nganda' and 'Erecta'.
The main Arabica varieties include SL-28, SL-14, Typica, and Kent.
Uganda coffee processing mainly uses wet processing (washed) and dry processing (natural). Most Robusta coffee is processed using the dry method, with a small portion using wet processing. Generally, wet processing produces higher quality coffee than dry processing. Uganda has 537 dry processing plants and 22 wet processing plants.
The Rwenzori Mountains are a mountain range on the border between Uganda and Congo, stretching approximately 130 kilometers from north to south with a maximum width of 50 kilometers, located between Lake Edward and Lake Albert. The peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains on the equator are covered with snow year-round, creating a magnificent and magical scene often shrouded in dense fog.
The Maliba region mainly features soft volcanic soil rich in minerals, surrounded by extensive forest vegetation and water sources. It is because of this excellent and special geographical environment that sun-dried processed beans exhibit more intense aromas. Honestly, this aroma seems to possess a kind of magic - it's difficult to describe it as simply a mixed fruit fragrance. It's just an incredibly rich and intense feeling that's truly refreshing.
