FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Varieties
Arabica beans are one of the most important varieties in commercial coffee, with a fruiting period within three years, featuring excellent aroma and acidity. The main origins of Arabica coffee beans include South America (except for parts of Argentina and Brazil), Central America, Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, and other East African countries), and Asia (parts of Indonesia, Yemen, India, and Papua New Guinea).
Introduction
Arabica (Coffea arabica) is one of the two very important varieties in the commercial coffee industry, with the other important variety being Robusta. Arabica coffee beans originate from Ethiopia and carry a mixed aroma of light jasmine, ripe melon, and various citrus fruits. They are renowned for their delicate balance between bitterness and sweetness.
The original habitat of Arabica (Coffea arabica) is the Abyssinian plateau in Ethiopia (now known as the Ethiopian Highlands). Initially, it was mainly used as medicine (Islamic monks used it as a secret medicine for healing body and mind or for awakening the brain). In the 13th century, the habit of roasting and drinking was cultivated, and in the 16th century, it was introduced to Europe through the Arab region, subsequently becoming a beverage loved by people worldwide.
Arabica coffee has very strict requirements for growing conditions. Fertile soil, humid air, moderate sunlight, and shade are all necessary factors for high quality. Due to its weaker resistance to pests and diseases and relatively low annual yield, high-altitude areas are more suitable for cultivation. Arabica coffee beans produced at elevations above 1,500 meters have the best quality. Arabica green beans have a dark, narrow appearance, and high-altitude Arabica, known as the highest quality, is rich in aroma with complex layers.
Characteristics
Flavor: Rich and delicate, with strong aroma, higher acidity, smooth texture, and unlikely to have bitterness.
Chromosomes: 44 chromosomes.
Caffeine: Lower compared to Robusta.
