FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Varieties

After drinking coffee for so long, have you ever wondered why some coffee tastes smooth with a mellow aftertaste, while others have an astringent acidity and strong bitterness? Of course, many factors determine a good cup of coffee, but the variety of coffee beans plays a crucial role.

Currently, coffee bean production areas are mostly concentrated in the equatorial region between 25 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude. High altitude, tropical climate, and fertile soil are necessary to grow high-quality coffee beans with full particles and rich coffee flavor. Coffee cultivation worldwide is mainly concentrated in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Besides geographical location, many other factors affect coffee quality: cultivation methods, soil fertility, weather (especially rainfall and sunlight), and precise latitude. All these factors, combined with the green bean processing methods, create the diversity of coffee from different countries and regions around the world.

The Arabica variety has extremely high requirements for its living environment—it needs to grow in areas with higher altitudes (above 600 to 2000 meters). The famous Blue Mountain coffee beans and Ethiopian coffee beans, the origin of coffee, are both produced in high-altitude areas. While requiring altitude, it also needs a humid climate and fertile soil to meet the basic requirements of the "Miss Arabica."

Most importantly, the delicate Arabica beans are afraid of direct sunlight, so in areas with strong sunlight, shade trees need to be planted alongside to provide shade. Even under these living conditions, the weak and sickly "Miss Arabica" is still susceptible to diseases and pests, threatening normal growth. Not to mention her poor ability to cultivate offspring, with low yield per unit area.

Arabica and Robusta are two very important varieties in the commercial coffee industry. Arabica beans grow best at an altitude of 3000 feet, with superior quality and strong aromatic flavor. However, their caffeine content is only half that of Robusta beans. Arabica beans account for 80% of global coffee trade. Their excellent flavor and aroma make them the only coffee that can be consumed directly on its own. The world-famous Blue Mountain coffee is made from Arabica coffee beans.

Robusta beans grow in lower altitude areas, are easy to cultivate, have high yields, and are resistant to diseases and pests, but have a woody, pungent smell. They can be chosen when inexpensive coffee is needed or when higher caffeine content is desired. Robusta coffee beans have a unique aroma and bitterness, with caffeine content much higher than Arabica.
