FrontStreet Coffee - Bolivian Coffee

Bolivia is one of the five most diverse countries in the world - a landlocked nation surrounded by five countries and deeply influenced by them. With a population of approximately 10 million, indigenous Indians account for about 60% of the total population and are divided into 36 ethnic groups. Mestizos (mixed European and Indian ancestry) make up 26%, with the remainder being Europeans and other ethnic groups. The terrain ranges from the 6,462-meter-high Illmani peak to Lake Titicaca, the world's highest-altitude navigable lake at 3,812 meters, as well as tropical rainforests! Such diverse geography can be described as a paradise for specialty coffee micro-batches.

Previously, most Bolivian coffee was of average quality, but in recent years, specialty coffee production has developed rapidly, with many quite excellent beans emerging. In recent years, the Cup of Excellence (COE) system, first implemented in Brazil, has gradually gained popularity. Bolivia has also introduced this system, which can stimulate farmers' enthusiasm for cultivation while improving coffee quality. COE beans, whether as raw beans or when roasted and brewed, are superior to ordinary coffee.

Coffee Varieties

Typica is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in Bolivia. Some farmers also grow other varieties, primarily Catuai, Caturra, Criollo, and Catimor, with newer varieties like Gesha and SL28 also being cultivated. The harvest season runs from July to November, with most coffee being wet-processed, though some undergoes natural processing.

Nearly all Bolivian coffee is cultivated organically. It is precisely this primitive yet scientific approach that has allowed Bolivian coffee to maintain its quality despite reduced production. Both the aroma of the ground beans and the brewed coffee are remarkably rich and intense. Bolivian coffee's combination of floral and fruity notes, while maintaining body and balance, leaves a lasting impression.

Although Bolivia's coffee production is not high, quality coffee cannot remain hidden. Every coffee bean is exceptionally precious. For every coffee enthusiast, enjoying a cup of Bolivian coffee is undoubtedly a precious and wonderful experience.

We believe that in the future, Bolivian coffee will surely regroup and make its mark in the coffee world.
