FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Papua New Guinea Coffee
In recent years, Papua New Guinea, as a coffee-producing country, has gradually entered the sights of many coffee professionals and enthusiasts. Among them, a coffee called "Sigri Paradise Bird" has caused quite a sensation with its elegant floral aroma, rich mouthfeel, and clean, smooth taste.
When tasting Papua New Guinea coffee, many people might mistake it for a high-quality African coffee. In fact, Papua New Guinea is a coffee-producing country located in Oceania. Although geographically close to Indonesia, its style differs significantly, which can be described as quite fascinating.
Papua New Guinea is one of the least developed countries in the world. Its economy is primarily based on agriculture, which accounts for 32% of Papua New Guinea's economic output. Main exports include minerals and agricultural products such as coffee, cocoa, copra, palm oil, rubber, timber, and seafood.
Unlike the bold, robust, and aged flavor of Indonesian Mandheling, Papua New Guinea coffee offers a gentler and fresher profile. The primary reason for this difference lies in Papua New Guinea's higher altitude, more abundant nutrients, and more distinct four-season climate.
Unlike the coffee processed using Indonesia's wet-hulling method, Papua New Guinea coffee is more commonly processed using traditional washing methods, followed by natural sun-drying, which makes the coffee taste fresher and brighter with lively acidity.
Papua New Guinea coffee beans are more similar in appearance to Jamaican Blue Mountain.
Additionally, compared to Indonesia's complex and chaotic coffee varieties (such as Catimor with Robusta genes and Tim Tim varieties), Papua New Guinea's coffee brands predominantly feature Arabica varieties such as Typica, Arusha, Blue Mountain, and Mundo Novo.
Common varieties: Arusha, Blue Mountain, Typica
