FrontStreet Coffee - Papua New Guinea PNG Coffee Introduction

Papua New Guinea

Many people think that Papua New Guinea (hereinafter referred to as PNG) coffee would be similar to Indonesian coffee, but in fact, they are completely different.

Coffee cultivation in PNG does not have a long history, with the earliest plantings dating back to the 1890s. Initially, PNG coffee was not used for commercial purposes. In 1926, 18 estates began using imported Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee seeds for cultivation, so it wasn't until 1928 that PNG truly entered commercial coffee production.

Beginning in the 1950s, PNG coffee cultivation started to grow on a larger scale, while the government began building extensive infrastructure to ensure the growth of the coffee industry. Papua New Guinea's coffee production is not very high, and its coffee beans are all carefully processed washed Arabica beans. Generally, washed coffee beans are full of bright fruit aromas but without strong acidity. Its characteristics include a silky smooth texture and wonderful fragrance, with moderate acidity. It's a rare coffee variety that combines high body with medium acidity. Whether used for espresso blends or general specialty coffee, it can compensate for the shortcomings of high-acidity coffee.

Western Highlands:

This is another important coffee-growing region in PNG. Much of the coffee from this region is grown around the capital of Mount Hagen (named after an old dormant volcano). Coffee from this region is uniformly stored in Goroka, making it more difficult to trace the origin of coffee from this area. The high altitude and fertile soil make this region highly capable of producing high-quality coffee.

Altitude: 1000-1800 meters

Harvest Season: April-September

Varieties: Bourbon, Typica, Arusha
