Africa has numerous coffee-producing regions, but many of their coffees are hard to find, thanks to smallholder farming, political conflict, and a lack of transparency in the coffee trade. Today the coffees most commonly available on the market come from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Yemen.

Ethiopia: The Country with the Most Unique Flavored Coffees

Among African origins, Ethiopia stands out as the premier choice. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, the optimal region for growing Arabica, and at the same time the country with the most coffee-growing areas and the greatest number of uniquely flavored coffees in the world.

Ethiopian coffee's distinctive flavors are closely tied to its cultivation methods. Ethiopia has grown only local varieties, with very little exchange of varieties between regions, which is what has preserved each coffee's regional character. Harar coffee from the east, for example, carries wine and spice flavors; Yirgacheffe from the south offers jasmine and bergamot aromas; and coffees from Sidamo and Djimah show notes of spice, flowers, red wine, nuts, and chocolate.

Ethiopia's coffee-growing regions are divided into eastern and western parts by the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, with lakes, volcanoes, lowlands, highlands, and forests interwoven, each evolving independently. The eastern part is mostly highland, producing beans with excellent flavor profiles, such as the bright acidity that made Yirgacheffe and Sidamo famous, and Harar with its captivating "complex aromas." The western part is largely covered by pristine forest, mostly in a state of completely natural evolution, which has produced a more diverse range of varieties. The varieties in the Kafa forests of the southwest are extremely disease-resistant. Because they evolved naturally with little artificial selection, their overall flavor quality is slightly inferior to that of the eastern regions.
