FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Nicaragua Maracaturra

Among Arabica coffee species, there are hundreds of subspecies we call varieties, each possessing unique qualities in flavor, size, color, productivity, and disease resistance. Maracaturra is a hybrid variety that combines Caturra, known for its productivity and balanced flavor, with "Elephant Bean" (Maragogipe), renowned for its premium quality coffee. This variety is commonly found in the coffee-growing regions of Nicaragua and El Salvador.

"Elephant Beans have large particles and a relatively balanced flavor profile, lacking the bright fruit acidity typical of other Central American coffees. However, they possess a clean mouthfeel and excellent aroma with a round, smooth texture. The drawback is their low yield. Crossing it with Caturra aims to improve both coffee bean productivity and quality.

Beyond their eye-catching bean shape, Maracaturra coffee beans offer an unforgettable complex flavor profile. When tasting them, we discover flavor characteristics that reveal themselves in different layers. To use a popular phrase, coffee from this variety can be described as "big size, big flavor."

However, the cultivation of this coffee variety is not widespread, with few growers choosing to plant it, making it relatively rare in the market. The reason is: this variety is a delicate and fragile plant, susceptible to leaf rust disease, so there are considerable risks during cultivation. Growers must invest more time and resources to control the occurrence of leaf rust. Additionally, compared to other common varieties, its productivity is lower. This means Maracaturra trees produce relatively few coffee cherries each season, presenting an economic challenge for growers.

Nicaragua's coffee cultivation and production benefit from uniquely favorable environmental conditions, with widespread fertile volcanic ash soil combined with shade-growing methods, establishing excellent production quality. Coffee from this region features rich body and delicate aroma, with moderate acidity and an excellent balance of sweet aftertaste and bitterness. In the eyes of international coffee connoisseurs, it is considered premium quality. The widespread volcanic ash and shade-growing cultivation methods produce high-quality Nicaraguan coffee with a gentle, smooth flavor and subtle acidity. Nicaraguan coffee beans are among the largest of all coffee beans.

Knowledge Point

Nicaragua enjoys a suitable climate and mineral-rich volcanic ash soil, providing a uniquely advantageous environment for coffee tree growth.
