FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Nicaraguan Coffee

Nicaragua is located in central Central America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The north-central region consists of highlands, while the eastern part is coastal plains, forming part of the Central American volcanic belt. The eastern plains have high temperatures and abundant rainfall, featuring a tropical maritime climate. The suitable climate provides an excellent growing environment for coffee cultivation.

High-quality Nicaraguan coffee ranks among the world's finest coffee beans and enjoys an excellent reputation. It has medium-sized beans, a mild flavor, and is very aromatic and rich.

Nicaraguan coffee beans are mainly of two varieties: Caturra and Catuai, with some additional Maracaturra (elephant beans).

Premium Nicaraguan coffee is grown in the northern and central parts of the country. Coffee is Nicaragua's pillar industry, producing nearly 100,000 tons of coffee beans annually. Many people who have tasted Nicaraguan coffee typically find it similar to Salvadoran and Honduran coffee. It has a rich aroma, is smooth and delicate, with a slightly bitter aftertaste, reminiscent of subtle flavors found in wine.

Due to political reasons, Nicaragua's coffee cooperation business with many countries is relatively limited, making it difficult for us to procure these coffee beans. Additionally, high-quality coffee beans are often driven to very high prices by the annual Cup of Excellence (COE) competition, making many people reluctant to spend significant amounts on them. However, its high-quality Nicaraguan coffee is indeed impressive.

Flavor Profile

The flavor of Nicaraguan coffee beans is closer to African flavors, with distinct tropical fruit aromas, often showing notes of mango and berries. At the same time, due to the unique topography of Central America, many coffee beans also have caramel and nutty notes, similar to the taste of dark chocolate. The coffee beans from this region have prominent acidity, a smooth mouthfeel, and are suitable for medium-light roasting.

Knowledge Point: Nicaragua has a suitable climate and mineral-rich volcanic ash soil, which provides a unique environment for coffee tree growth.
