FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Bolivian Coffee

Bolivia, located southeast of Peru, is a country of high mountains. La Paz (the capital) has an altitude of up to 3,660 meters. Coffee cannot be grown in such high and cold places. However, the YUNGAS region in northeastern La Paz borders the Amazon River basin, with a slightly lower altitude of about 1,500-2,500 meters. The average annual temperature is about 10-15 degrees Celsius, with no frost damage in winter, and fertile soil - these are the characteristics of Bolivia's main coffee-producing region.

Coffee Varieties

Typica is the most widely grown coffee variety in Bolivia, with some farmers also growing other varieties such as Caturra.

Processing Methods

Bolivian farmers mainly use the washed method to process green beans, with some occasionally using natural or honey processing methods. It's worth mentioning that because Bolivia's climate is colder than other coffee-producing countries, many farmers use machine drying rather than sun drying.

Flavor Profile

Coffee produced in Bolivia's high-altitude regions typically carries a deep and full sweetness, gentle citrus acidity, and alternating notes of black fruits and berries. Coffee produced at relatively lower altitudes shows a balanced mouthfeel, excellent chocolate sweetness, gentle acidity, and flavors of malt and dried fruit.

Although Bolivian coffee flavor might be slightly inferior to beans with strong flavors like Kenya, Ethiopia, Panama, and Geisha, Bolivian coffee is grown in unique altitudes and fertile soil. Its characteristics are excellent balance and sweetness, with flavors completely different from most coffees. Chocolate flavors appear at the first sip, followed by floral notes, bringing a brand-new taste experience.

Knowledge Point: ECX is a state-owned institution, and coffee is one of the main traded items, accounting for nearly half of the trading volume.
