FrontStreet Coffee - Geisha Coffee Introduction
The rare and precious Geisha is the most legendary coffee variety. Its pinyin name "Geisha" once sparked great debate among European and American coffee enthusiasts. Some transliterated it as "Gaisha," while others, based on its literal meaning, jokingly referred to it as "Geisha" (the Japanese word for artistic performer).
In 1996, Daniel Peterson, owner of Hacienda La Esmeralda, heard that coffee from a neighboring estate had citrus flavors, so he purchased it and incorporated it into his estate. Initially, the Peterson family mixed and sold coffee from both estates, but always noticed a subtle orange-honey fragrance and floral notes, distinct from the berry flavors typical of Central American coffee. In 2002, the estate owner conducted cupping sessions of coffee beans from both estates individually, eventually discovering that this captivating floral-honey and orange aroma actually came from the windbreak trees.
The Geisha coffee tree is tall and slender with sparse foliage, appearing unremarkable. The vertical spacing between its branches is larger than that of typical coffee trees, making it a low-yield variety with low economic value. Consequently, the original Geisha trees were relegated by their estate owners to remote and windy areas to serve as windbreak trees.
The unique genetics of Geisha require it to be cultivated at high altitudes above 1,500 meters, where it must undergo the tempering of cold winds and mountain air to develop its extraordinary flavor profile. In recent years, although Hacienda La Esmeralda has continuously expanded its land to increase production, Geisha yields remain limited, with annual production not exceeding 12 tons, accounting for at most 4-5% of the estate's total coffee output. With such scarcity, Geisha is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Hacienda La Esmeralda.
Hacienda La Esmeralda is located in a corner of Baru Volcano in Panama, so the coffee beans produced in this region were often named after Baru Volcano before becoming famous. La Esmeralda estate was purchased by Rudolph A. Peterson, a Swedish-American banker and father of Price Peterson. Rudolph bought it merely for vacationing and eventual retirement use, little expecting that this estate would become a representative of Panama's specialty coffee estates.
