Introduction to Geisha Coffee

The microclimate of Panama's highlands is the most important resource that makes Panama's unique coffee one of a kind. The Republic of Panama's east-to-west environment allows cold air currents to flow through the central mountain range and converge above 6,500 feet, creating various microclimates in the Boquete and Volcán-Candela regions, making them the main production areas for Panama's unique coffee. These specialty coffees are cultivated in the nutrient-rich, balanced soil of the Baru Volcan region. This small country has the most fiercely competitive coffee auctions in the world, with the highest average transaction prices.

About Geisha

Today, the best coffee is no longer Kopi Luwak or Blue Mountain - Geisha is the undisputed new king of the coffee kingdom. In 1931, Geisha was quietly exported from the Geisha Mountain in southwestern Ethiopia (coincidentally with the same pronunciation as the Japanese word for "geisha") to Kenya, wandering through Tanzania and Costa Rica, and in the 1960s was transplanted to Panama. After nearly half a century, it made a stunning debut, defeating the perennial champions Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica varieties, sweeping the first prizes in the Panama National Bean Cupping Competition in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

In 2007, Geisha won the championship again at the International Famous Bean Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with a bidding price of $130 per pound, setting the highest price record in competition bean history. It is reported that subsequent Panama National Bean competitions would be divided into Geisha and non-Geisha groups to prevent Geisha from stealing the spotlight from other varieties.

Geisha belongs to the Typica family, but it made its name after more than seventy years away from Ethiopia, confirming the saying that Ethiopia is the genetic treasure trove of Arabica. Just giving away a variety is enough to create waves in the coffee market. Geisha is grown in many regions around the world, with Panama's quality being the highest and the price being the highest.

Geisha coffee plants are known for their unique characteristics - slender fruits or coffee cherries, with a light body carrying honey and citrus flavors, providing excellent mouthfeel and cup characteristics. Geisha coffee presents a soft yet rich floral aroma and jasmine-like fragrance, with a unique and delicate acidity, balanced and bright, with the shimmer of white wine and aromas of berries, mango, papaya, and orange. The long aftertaste provides unique bergamot-like notes.

Key Information

Geisha is more precious than gold because of its extremely low production and the need to participate in bidding, making it very difficult to obtain Geisha green beans.
