Sidamo is a very important coffee-producing region in Ethiopia, administratively classified as a province. Yirgacheffe town is located within Sidamo province. Because its flavor profile is quite unique, it became independent from Sidamo, which also demonstrates how exceptional the Sidamo region truly is.

Guji is a district within Sidamo province. Shakisso town belongs to the Guji region. The Gigecha Washing Station is located in Dambi Uddo village, Shakisso town. This washing station has been established for nearly 4 years, and its owner is also involved in coffee trading, making the station more receptive to advanced processing techniques.

Shakisso is located in Guji, in the southern part of the Oromia region, bordering Sidamo and Gedeo. This area contains many mining pits that were historically used for gold mining, which is why there are many holes in this coffee-growing area. This makes walking through the coffee cultivation areas quite dangerous.

Shakisso is a distinctive region within Guji/Sidamo. Even within Sidamo, it's a remote area far from most coffee-producing regions. Another famous local product is gold. Factors such as miners, land, and ethnic tensions also made this region unstable in 2006. Therefore, the biggest challenge facing this area today is the need for manpower to maintain the cultivation areas and harvest coffee. Local small farmers began growing organic coffee in 2001 and work closely with medium-sized coffee producers because they are skilled in growing forest coffee in high-altitude areas.

Coffee from this region is quite unique, and the coffee produced frequently gains market attention. Ninety Plus's legendary bean "Nekisse" originally meant "nectar from Shakisso," with both the region and the name derived from Shakisso.

Knowledge Point: Shakisso (sometimes spelled Shakiso) is the most noteworthy micro-region within the Sidamo coffee-producing area.
