FrontStreet Coffee Ethiopia Natural Sidamo Ardi G1 Introduction

Region Introduction

The Sidamo region is located in the southern part of Ethiopia, with an altitude range between 1,400-2,200 meters. It has distinct dry and wet seasons with two rainy periods, allowing for two harvests per year. Coffee cultivation in this area is typically small-scale, with farmers growing coffee alongside other crops in their home gardens, which is more economically beneficial for them. Unlike the citrus flavors of Yirgacheffe, the ripe berry flavors of the Sidamo region appear more gentle and rich.

This coffee is named after Ardi, the alias of the female hominin fossil ARA-VP-6/500 discovered in 1992. Ardi is an ancient creature that existed earlier than Lucy, the oldest known Australopithecus. The name Ardi comes from the Afar language, meaning "ground" (originally mistaken to mean "root").

Flavor Profile

Natural processed Sidamo beans appear yellowish-green. In addition to the citrus aroma found in washed beans, they have a richer fruit aroma. This special fruit aroma comes from the two-week period during natural processing when coffee beans dry and ferment while wrapped in pulp. Therefore, the fermented fruit acidity is the most distinctive characteristic of natural processed beans.

Fresh strawberry and blueberry-toned fermented berry aroma, accompanied by the sweet fragrance of jackfruit, mango, and ripe banana, with the acidity of white grapes and an elegant, refreshing black tea mouthfeel. The middle to later stages reveal a subtle brandy-like aroma, with a finish of cinnamon chocolate and nuts, offering a smooth and flowing mouthfeel.
