FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe Coffee Introduction
Coffee enthusiasts who frequently drink coffee know that there are as many as 1,500 coffee flavors. A good bean might have rich and mellow flavors, subtle and lingering aromas, abundant fruit notes, or complex bitter tones. However, if you want to taste a feeling of lightness and happiness in your coffee, then Yirgacheffe is undoubtedly the perfect choice. Baristas will recommend it to you as "the girl's smile" - a spring breeze rushing toward you, bright red berries hanging on branches, a garden where sunlight filters through gaps to cover the green land.
Like other single-origin coffee names we're familiar with, "Yirgacheffe" is also a place name. But whether in Chinese translation or in the pronunciation of the Ethiopian language, the name carries a girlish sweetness that distinguishes it from other serious and deep coffee-producing regions.
The small town of "Yirgacheffe" in Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 1800-2100m, is cultivated by local small farmers. With abundant rainfall and iron-rich soil, it is a sacred place for growing coffee. When roasting these beans, special attention is paid to preserving the original flavor characteristics of the coffee beans. The taste is refreshing and elegant, with bright flavors and rich floral aromas.
When we praise a fruit for being delicious, it's not because it's sweet enough, but because we can taste the real flavor of the fruit. Similarly, a good cup of Yirgacheffe shouldn't be overwhelmingly fragrant. Like a gentle breeze, like a young girl, appropriately expressing one's true self is just right. Yirgacheffe is just a high-altitude sub-producing area nestled by mountains and water in the Sidamo province of Ethiopia. Because its production methods and flavors are so outstanding, its unique style has made it the most renowned producing area in Africa.
The mountain villages of the Yirgacheffe region are shrouded in mist throughout all four seasons, with gentle breezes, cool but not hot, rainy but not damp. The original Yirgacheffe coffee trees were planted on the mountains by European monks, and today they are mostly grown in farmers' own backyards or mixed with other crops in farmland. Each household's production is limited, making it typical pastoral coffee. Yirgacheffe mostly uses the washed method to preserve a refreshing and clean taste, but a small amount of specialty beans is intentionally sun-dried to enhance the charming fruity aroma and richness.
As one of the most uniquely flavored coffee beans in the world today, a cup of Yirgacheffe should bring you intense citrus and lemongrass aromas, jasmine, pomelo blossom, and gardenia floral notes, with rich yet soft and pleasant acidity. Ethiopia grades coffee by defect beans, with the highest grade for both washed and sun-dried being G1.
Knowledge Point
The Arabica species was most likely first discovered in southern Sudan, but it wasn't until it spread to Ethiopia that it gradually flourished.
