FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to the Robusta Variety

In the coffee industry, Robusta beans are often mentioned alongside Arabica beans, which are currently the most widely used. However, this is actually an imprecise statement. In fact, the Robusta variety was originally a mutation of the Congo variety (scientific name: Coffee Canephora), and it should be the Congo variety that is compared with Arabica. It's only because of the widespread use of Robusta beans that they have completely replaced the concept of the Congo variety in everyday understanding.

The Unusual Flavor of Robusta

In terms of flavor, Robusta coffee beans can be said to have little merit. Their flavor is extremely distinctive and strong, often described as having a rubbery taste. After deep roasting, they can produce concentrated, intense bitterness. In daily home brewing, they can be used in combination with beans that have clear fruit acidity to make cold brew or cold-drip coffee. As for other flavors, they are practically non-existent for this coffee variety.

Applications of Robusta

Due to the strong flavor of Robusta beans, they are not suitable for single-origin coffee. As for their supposed use in making certain coffee types, this can only be described as a practice adopted by some coffee shops to reduce their production costs. After all, for those types of coffee, since large amounts of milk, cream, sugar, chocolate sauce, and other ingredients are added, these are sufficient to mask the unpleasant flavors.

In long-term development, the main use of Robusta beans has been in the coffee industry, primarily for the industrial production of regular instant coffee, canned coffee, and liquid coffee. Due to their high bitterness and caffeine content, they can yield more finished products under the same conditions, reducing overall costs and enabling manufacturers to lower their expenses and expand market coverage.

This industrial use has also made this type of coffee an agricultural pillar industry in some economically underdeveloped regions worldwide, with large-scale cultivation. Vietnam, for example, has revitalized its national economy through widespread cultivation of this coffee and has surpassed Colombia to become the world's second-largest coffee exporting country.

Knowledge Point: Cultivation of Robusta

Robusta is cultivated at altitudes below 800 meters. Robusta has extremely strong adaptability and strong resistance to pests and diseases.
