Is Robusta Coffee Delicious and Why Does Robusta Coffee Bean Have Such a Bad Reputation
FrontStreet Coffee - Robusta Variety Introduction
The Robusta coffee tree is a species between shrubs and tall trees. It has longer leaves, bright green in color, and can grow up to 10 meters tall, but with shallow roots. Its fruit is slightly rounder and smaller than Arabica coffee fruit, with flat and round beans and straight creases in the middle.
Robusta Coffee
Coffea canephora (Robusta coffee) is an indigenous coffee variety from western Africa. According to research, Robusta coffee spread from the Congo region of West Africa and was brought to Java for cultivation. Using Java as a transit point, this type of coffee was then introduced to other regions around the world, including almost all countries that produce Arabica coffee. There are several different varieties within Coffea canephora, though they are generally all referred to as Robusta coffee. Later, people also hybridized Arabica coffee with Robusta coffee to cultivate new coffee varieties.
The color and flavor of coffee are influenced by many factors, such as soil, sunlight, rainfall cycles, air currents, pests, and diseases. Many coffee varieties have genetic similarities, but due to different cultivation regions, they show clear differences in names and flavors.
Although people cannot accurately construct a roadmap of coffee cultivation and cultural dissemination today, based on limited information, Java, Indonesia might be an extraordinary place in the map of coffee dissemination.
Because of their high yield and the ability to use mechanical harvesting in lowlands and plains, Robusta beans have significant price advantages compared to Arabica beans, making them widely used in commercial coffee blends. Due to their rich oil content, Robusta beans are used in high proportions in Italy—the homeland of espresso coffee. Some espresso bean producers or cafes use Robusta beans in blends with proportions ranging from 30-60%.
Knowledge Point: Robusta is cultivated at altitudes below 800 meters. Robusta has extremely strong adaptability and relatively strong resistance to pests and diseases.
