The coffee genus belongs to the Rubiaceae family within the order Gentianales of the dicotyledonous class of angiosperms. Coffee trees are part of the coffee genus and are distributed in the tropical regions of the Eastern Hemisphere, primarily concentrated in Africa. While there are approximately 70 species within the coffee genus, the most common varieties used for commercial purposes are essentially just Arabica and Robusta.

However, Robusta has another name: Canephora. The Canephora species is not as widely known. In general, Canephora species are referred to as Robusta species. Strictly speaking, Robusta should be classified within the Canephora species, as Robusta is merely a branch within the Canephora species. With gradual development and growing recognition, it became what we commonly call medium-bean coffee, until eventually, the Robusta species naturally became synonymous with the Canephora species.

Robusta Species:

Altitude: Located at sea level to 900 meters;

Annual rainfall: 2000mm to 3000mm;

Sunlight temperature: 24°C to 30°C;

Advantages: The variety itself has an aroma similar to barley tea, with good disease resistance and heat tolerance, and is widely cultivated;

Disadvantages: Has a relatively heavy bitter taste;

Characteristics: Can grow in various soil types, fears cold and drought;

Flavor: Earthy, cedar, chocolate, with prominent bitterness but relatively full body;

Cultivation regions: Mostly concentrated in Brazil, West Africa, and subtropical regions.

The production volume of Robusta species exceeds that of Arabica species, but its excessive bitterness makes it less appealing. With low tannins but exceptionally rich body, to be honest, Robusta shouldn't be viewed so unfavorably. Robusta species also have grade classifications, and high-quality Robusta has always been an important component of espresso coffee culture.
