FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe Aricha G1 Washed Introduction
Yirgacheffe is synonymous with fruity and floral coffees, offering an unforgettable clean, bright cup with lively fruit acidity. Yirgacheffe is an excellent growing region with numerous legendary stories and has been one of the most popular single-origin coffees in the specialty coffee market over the past decade. When discussing specialty coffee, Yirgacheffe is inevitably mentioned.
Yirgacheffe is Ethiopia's highest altitude coffee growing region, serving as both a local transportation hub and coffee collection center. It boasts very advanced and developed coffee processing equipment and human resources, resulting in extremely high coffee quality.
This Yirgacheffe comes from the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia, specifically the Aricha processing station. Grown at an altitude of 1850-1880 meters, it consists of native Ethiopian varieties and is processed using the washed method, which creates a cleaner, brighter cup profile.
The Aricha processing station is located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, which oversees the well-known areas of Yirgacheffe and Kochere. This station is owned by Mr. Surafel Birhanu and serves approximately 650-750 small coffee farmers in the vicinity, who deliver ripe coffee cherries for processing in exchange for cash. The station produces about 5 containers (18.2 metric tons per 20-foot container) of specialty coffee annually, divided into 10 commercial grades sold to global coffee markets.
The washed Yirgacheffe G1 Aricha is composed of numerous small individual coffee farmers, with an average coffee cultivation area of about 1 hectare per farmer. The growing altitude ranges from 1850-1880 meters, and the coffee varieties are mainly a mix of Typica and local native varieties.
After the processing station screens and grades red cherry-colored coffee fruits, the washed beans are placed on raised drying beds for natural sun drying. During the first few days of drying, the beans are turned every 2-3 hours to prevent over-fermentation. After 4-6 weeks of sun drying, when the moisture content reaches 12% or below, the beans are directly sent to the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) warehouse in Awassa. Cupping and grading are typically conducted while the washed beans are still in parchment form, with hulling performed only before export.
This batch of washed Yirgacheffe G1 Aricha has been rated as G1, the highest grade by ECX, demonstrating excellence from raw bean appearance, consistency, and freshness to dry aroma and flavor.
