FrontStreet Coffee - Guatemala New Oriental Wine Aoriente Introduction
Unlike previous Guatemalan practices where good beans were washed and lower quality beans were sun-dried, these beans are strictly selected from bright red ripe fruits and carefully screened to produce high-end sun-dried beans.
The Aoriente production area is located in Guatemala's New Oriental region, which has mineral-rich volcanic soil that is ideal for coffee cultivation.
Guatemala's sun-dried coffee beans have relatively low production and were once used as competition beans by WBC finalists. The sun-drying process results in more delicate and balanced flavors.
New Oriental Region
The Guatemalan Coffee Association has established the Guatemalan coffee brand, defining coffee from eight different origins. These regions are divided into Antigua, Huehuetenango, Cobán Rainforest, Atitlán, Fraijanes Plains, San Marcos Volcano, Acatenango, and New Oriental.
New Oriental is Guatemala's youngest coffee region. Here, rainfall is abundant, and it is perennially shaded by clouds, giving it a climate similar to the Cobán Rainforest region. In ancient times, it was a volcanic area, and the soil here consists of metamorphic rocks rich in minerals. Before beginning coffee cultivation, New Oriental was once Guatemala's poorest region. Since the 1950s, farmers in the mountains have relied on this naturally nutritious land to start coffee cultivation, and gradually the area has come alive with vitality.
