FrontStreet Coffee - Catimor Variety Introduction

Coffee cultivation in Baoshan began in the mid-1950s, with the first coffee seedling introduced from Southeast Asia by the late patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Liang Jinshan. The Baoshan coffee cultivation area is located on the eastern foothills of the Gaoligong Mountains, belonging to the dry-hot valley region with a South Asian tropical monsoon climate characterized by dry winters and wet summers. With abundant sunshine, rich heat, limited rainfall, warm winters with little fog, and frost-free conditions year-round, it enjoys the reputation of being a "natural greenhouse" and "tropical treasure land."

The locally renowned Lujiangba small bean coffee, with its exceptional quality, won a gold medal at the 42nd Brussels Eureka Expo in 1993. It was praised by world-class coffee experts from Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, and other countries as having "world-class quality" and "world-class cultivation standards." In recent years, with the expansion of international trade, Lujiangba's small bean coffee has become even more renowned worldwide.

European, American, and Arab countries, especially merchants from Britain, America, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Macau, regard it as premium coffee, with product demand exceeding supply. In December 2010, after review by China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, it was decided to implement national geographical indication product protection for "Baoshan Small Bean Coffee." As of the end of 2016, Baoshan's coffee cultivation area reached 260,000 mu with a total output of 35,000 tons, mainly distributed in counties (cities) such as Longyang, Longling, Changning, and Shidian.

Baoshan is one of the first areas in Yunnan to cultivate coffee. Currently, the small bean coffee varieties cultivated in Baoshan include Catimor, Coffea Arabica var. typica Cramer, Coffea Arabica var. bourbon Choussy, Coffea Arabica var. Caturra KMC, Mundo Novo culti var, and S288.

Currently, in the dry-hot valley areas along the Nujiang and Lancang River basins within Baoshan, more than 20 tropical zone towns and cities cultivate small bean coffee. As of 2016, Baoshan's coffee cultivation area reached 260,000 mu with a total output of 35,000 tons, achieving an output value of 1.01 billion yuan, ranking third in the province for cultivation area and second for total production. Baoshan small bean coffee has been exported to countries such as Britain, France, Spain, Canada, the United States, and Russia, and has entered the Thai market for the first time, generating over $30 million in foreign exchange earnings and receiving widespread acclaim from foreign customers.

Laos Coffee Growing Conditions

Laos has a tropical northern edge and subtropical humid monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 20.1°C. The matching of low temperatures with drought, abundant sunshine, and significant day-night temperature differences creates ideal conditions. Annual precipitation ranges from 1,700 to 2,060 millimeters. With an average elevation of 800-1,700 meters, it is the most suitable area for coffee cultivation.

The Lao government has strong environmental protection awareness, strictly controlling the use of pesticides and fertilizers, ensuring that the produced coffee meets organic product requirements. The Bolaven Plateau is Asia's only coffee growing region with volcanic ash soil.

Catimor Honey Process Cupping Notes

Catimor honey process reveals flavors of tropical fruits, chocolate, floral notes, and nuts. Laos's geographical conditions are quite suitable for coffee tree cultivation, and the honey processing method requires higher technical skills, resulting in more intense coffee fruit aromas.

Knowledge point: As early as 1892, a French missionary brought coffee seeds to Yunnan and successfully planted the first coffee tree in a place called Zhukula.
