FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Cuban Crystal Mountain Coffee

Most regions of Cuba have a tropical rainforest climate, with only the southwestern coastal leeward slopes featuring a tropical savanna climate. The average annual temperature is 25°C, and annual precipitation exceeds 1000 millimeters in most areas. This geographical location and climate conditions are remarkably similar to Jamaica's Blue Mountains. Consequently, Cuban coffee shares the island coffee characteristics of Blue Mountain: low acidity, good body, and excellent balance. And like Blue Mountain coffee, it is expensive!

The best coffee-growing region in Cuba is located in the central mountain range. Because this area not only cultivates coffee but also contains valuable minerals such as quartz and crystals, it is known as Cuban Crystal Mountain Coffee. Crystal Mountain Coffee is entirely hand-picked, and high-quality coffee for export undergoes washed processing to maximally eliminate defective beans and other impurities. Therefore, "Crystal Mountain Coffee" has become almost synonymous with premium Cuban coffee.

The Origin of Cuban Crystal Mountain Coffee

〖CubitaCoffee〗 - In Cuba, coffee cultivation is managed by the state. Cuba's fertile land, humid climate, and abundant rainfall make it a natural treasure for coffee cultivation, providing favorable environmental conditions for coffee tree growth.

Coffee is entirely hand-picked, and high-quality coffee for export undergoes washed processing to maximally eliminate defective beans and other impurities. "Crystal Mountain Coffee" has become almost synonymous with premium Cuban coffee: soft and persistent fruit acidity, clean taste, delicate and smooth texture, excellent balance between acidity and bitterness, and a pleasant aftertaste.

Most of the highest quality coffee within the country is exported, with exports accounting for about one-fifth of total production, while the remainder is consumed domestically. Interestingly, domestic production cannot meet domestic consumption needs. Cuba once spent $40 million annually importing low-quality coffee and even resorted to extreme measures to satisfy domestic coffee demand.

Today, Cuba's coffee production remains low, at around 7,000 tons annually. Coffee for domestic consumption is sun-dried or mechanically dried, while export coffee is washed. Outdated equipment, muddy roads, and backward cultivation techniques pose significant challenges to the development of Cuba's coffee industry.

Knowledge Point: Coffee roasting is a process that triggers Maillard reactions and caramelization within green beans, producing more wonderful flavors.
