FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yemen Mocha Varieties
Actually, the naming of Yemeni coffee as Mocha mostly originates from the port called "Mocha" in Yemen. Yemen was the first country to commercialize coffee cultivation, and Yemeni coffee was exported to the world through the port of Mocha (Port of Al-Mokha). Therefore, people gradually referred to all coffee from various regions of Yemen as "Mocha." However, this general term is not actually the true variety name of Yemeni coffee.
For a long time, Yemeni coffee was actually named by its production region. For example, Mattari, which occasionally appears on the market, comes from the Bani Mattar region of Yemen, while Ismaeli comes from the Haraaz region. However, today, many other place names have gradually been forgotten.
Mocha was named after the famous port of Mocha. In the 15th century, the entire Middle Eastern and African coffee-exporting countries did not have thriving transportation industries. Yemen's Mocha was the main commercial export port near the Red Sea at that time. Coffee was mainly concentrated at the port of Mocha and then exported abroad, and all African coffee exported in this way was collectively called Mocha coffee. Although emerging ports have replaced the status of the port of Mocha, the origins of Mocha coffee from the port of Mocha period have been preserved. The coffee beans produced in these origins are still called Mocha coffee beans, originating from Ethiopia.
The reason why Mocha enjoys such acclaim is because it possesses the most unique, richest, and most fascinatingly complex flavors in the world: red wine aroma, wild flavor, dried fruit taste, grapes, cinnamon, blueberries, tobacco, woody notes, sweet spices, and even chocolate flavors... with a special texture and multi-layered characteristics.
True Mocha coffee beans are produced in the Republic of Yemen on the southwestern side of the Arabian Peninsula, growing on steep mountain slopes at altitudes of 900-2400 meters. Currently, the coffee beans produced in Yemen are considered the best, followed by Ethiopia's Mocha.
Mocha coffee beans are small but highly aromatic, possessing a unique acidity and fresh citrus fragrance. They have a mellow richness with an intoxicatingly smooth aftertaste, along with a unique aroma and gentle acidity and sweetness. They have excellent sweetness and a distinctive flavor profile.
Knowledge Point
Ethiopia holds a primordial position in the coffee world. It is the birthplace of Arabica beans and is currently the largest Arabica-producing country in Africa. The Kaffa Forest in Ethiopia is even known as the "coffee gene bank."
