Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Sidamo Coffee

The Sidamo region is located in southern Ethiopia, extending eastward to the Arsi and Bale administrative regions and westward to the Gamogofa administrative area. Sidamo coffee is cultivated at altitudes between 1,400m-2,000m. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with the main coffee growing areas situated around the Great Rift Valley. The largest town in Sidamo is Hawassa, which has developed rapidly in recent years, featuring many modern restaurants and hotels, and serves as an important coffee export hub. Sidamo coffee flavors are extremely diverse, with different soil types, microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties creating distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town.

In Sidamo's natural drying fields, coffee beans are placed on wooden racks with hemp nets. Workers take turns manually turning the coffee under sun exposure. Natural process Sidamo is typically exported as G4 grade, while washed Sidamo, due to its more refined processing compared to natural methods, is mostly exported as G2 grade.

Sidamo coffee flavors are extremely diverse. Different soil types, microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, combined with the region's diverse topography of towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains, create unique characteristics. The local geology consists of nutrient-rich, well-drained volcanic soil with depths of nearly two meters, and the surface soil appears dark brown or brown.

Sidamo green coffee beans have a slightly grayish appearance, with some areas showing larger beans while others show smaller ones. They possess both gentle and bright acidity, balanced body intensity, sweet and spicy notes, making them one of the garden coffees from Ethiopia's southern highlands. Unlike typical African coffees, Sidamo features clear fruit acidity, smooth texture, and delicate floral and herbaceous aromas.

The region's greatest advantage lies in maintaining soil fertility through organic material recycling, using fallen leaves from surrounding trees and plant residues as fertilizer. This creates distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town. From 2010-2012, it consistently achieved high scores of 92-94 on CR (Coffee Review), the authoritative American coffee evaluation website. This demonstrates the exceptional quality of green beans from this production region.
