The Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala) is a presidential republic in Central America, located in the southern part of the North American continent. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Mexico to the north, Belize to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. The total area of the country is 108,889 square kilometers (approximately three times the size of Taiwan). Although Guatemala is small in area, it is uniquely blessed with both mountains and seas, boasting over 300 diverse microclimates including tropical rainforests, volcanic geology, and plateau valleys, making it world-renowned.
Antigua is Guatemala's most renowned coffee-producing region, a flat highland surrounded by three active volcanoes: Agua (Spanish for "water"), Fuego (Spanish for "fire"), and Acatenango. The region experiences little rainfall, intense sunlight, and low humidity. However, frequent volcanic activity has resulted in soil containing large amounts of pumice, which helps retain moisture and overcomes the problem of scarce rainfall. Additionally, Antigua's significant day-night temperature differences contribute to the accumulation of organic matter in coffee cherries.
Volcanoes once destroyed this formerly prosperous capital in an instant, taking away all its splendor and beauty overnight. After this devastating setback, the mountain city lost more than 200 years of magnificence, and Antigua never regained its former glory. Now returned to simplicity, Antigua is diligently managed by the remaining hardworking Indians. These diligent and resilient Indians became the later coffee producers. They not only discovered the rich and enticing unique aroma of Antigua coffee but also shared it with people worldwide. Today, Antigua coffee enjoys the reputation of being among the world's finest quality coffees and is praised by coffee connoisseurs as the most excellent and distinctive coffee in the world.
Unlike many coffees you may have tasted, Guatemala Antigua coffee offers not only a rich and smooth texture but also carries hints of tobacco flavor. The combination of cocoa and tobacco will amaze anyone tasting Antigua coffee for the first time. One marvels at this unique taste experience, which is truly distinctive.
This unique flavor is inseparable from the origin of the coffee beans. Antigua City is a famous coffee-producing region in the Americas. Three connected volcanoes not only provide Antigua City with a beautiful landscape but also bless it with the most fertile land, allowing coffee trees to thrive here. Each volcanic eruption brings large amounts of nitrogen to the coffee trees. Coffee trees that fully absorb ammonia components produce coffee beans that naturally possess a roasted aroma.
Over time, Guatemala Antigua coffee beans naturally develop a tobacco aroma when processed, hence Antigua coffee is also known as "cigarette coffee." "Antigua Flora de Oro" is the finest among cigarette coffees. Not only does it come from high-altitude areas in the heart of the volcanic region, but the planting, harvesting, washing, sun-drying, and drying processes are all strictly managed by the renowned La Minita estate. It naturally presents the world with excellent quality. "Flora de Oro" (Flower God), true to its name, offers an overall clean and bright taste, with delicate floral and fruity sweetness complementing cocoa bitterness and caramel sweetness, while a light smoky flavor leaves an endless aftertaste.
Knowledge Point:
"Arabica" is not synonymous with good coffee. Even among Arabica varieties, there are grade differences.
