FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Coffee Introduction

Colombian coffee (Café de Colombia) originates from Colombia and is one of the few specialty coffees sold under a country name in the world. In terms of quality, it has received praise that other coffees cannot match. Compared to other producing countries, Colombia is more concerned with product development and production promotion. This, combined with its superior geographical and climatic conditions, makes Colombian coffee high-quality, flavorful, and renowned worldwide.

Roasted coffee beans release a sweet aroma, characterized by quality traits of sweetness within acidity and balanced bitterness. Due to its appropriate concentration, it is often used in premium coffee blends. Colombian coffee exudes a light and elegant fragrance, not as strong as Brazilian coffee, nor as acidic as African coffee, but rather a sweet, subtle aroma that is understated and elegant.

Colombia is the world's largest producer of washed Arabica, the second-largest Arabica producer, and the third-largest coffee producer overall, with an annual production approximately equal to one-third of Brazil's.

However, this large-producing country is not what I imagined - with many commercial large estates forming large-scale production. Instead, 95% of Colombia consists of small farms, numerous in quantity, mostly with planting areas under 5 hectares, almost entirely dependent on manual production, presented in a form of small-scale farming and family trade. This has both advantages and disadvantages, but undoubtedly allows us to taste more diverse characteristics or differences.

Colombia's overall terrain is relatively flat, high in the west and low in the east. The eastern part consists of the Amazon River alluvial plain, accounting for two-thirds of the area; the eastern part is paralleled by three north-south running Cordillera mountain ranges. Colombia's specialty coffee is basically grown on these mountain ranges.

The mountains rise and fall, stretching from north to south, with varied soils and overlapping rich microclimates, forming numerous large and small producing regions that can grow over 80 different flavored coffees. This also means that in Colombia, there are places harvesting ripe coffee fruits almost any time of the year.

Knowledge Point: The establishment of the Colombian National Coffee Growers Federation (abbreviated as FNC, a large non-governmental organization) in 1927 greatly promoted the development of the national coffee industry, providing various services and support for the country's coffee producers.
