FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Coffee Introduction
Colombia is located in the northwest of South America, bordering Venezuela and Brazil to the east, Ecuador and Peru to the south, connected to Panama to the northwest, facing the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country covers an area of approximately 1.142 million square kilometers, ranking 4th in South America. Colombia is the only country in South America with both North Pacific coastline and Caribbean Sea coastline.
Colombia is the world's second-largest coffee exporting country, accounting for about 15% of global production. Its coffee trees are mostly planted in the three mountain ranges that run north-south, with only Arabica varieties. Although its production ranking is lower than Brazil, its coffee beans are of excellent quality, with rich and unique aroma, sweet with acidity, moderate bitterness, making it suitable for both single origin and blends.
South America has become the continent with the largest coffee production, thanks to the high altitude surrounded by the Andes foothills, where the climate is mild, the air is humid, and there is good rainfall, making it very suitable for coffee growth. This makes Colombian coffee rich in flavor and outstanding in quality. Some have rich chocolate and nut aromas, while others have jam-like sweet taste. The roasted coffee beans release a sweet aroma, with the characteristic quality of sweet with acidity and balanced bitterness. The concentration is appropriate, different from the strong intensity of Brazilian coffee, it is a sweet and light fragrance, low-key and elegant.
According to geographical location, it is divided into three producing regions: northern, central, and southern. Among these, there are six major premium origin coffee producing regions in Colombia: Sierra Nevada, Santander, Cauca, Huila, Narino, and Paisaje cultural cafetero. Colombia is the only country in South America that has both Pacific coast and Caribbean coast. Within Colombia, the best producing regions are almost all volcanic soil. Speaking of volcanoes, we have to mention the two regions with the highest quality coffee in Colombia, Huila and Narino in the south. These two provinces have two famous volcanoes in Colombia: the Nevado del Huila in Huila province and the Nevado del Galers in Narino province.
Volcanic ash is rich in minerals, making the soil more fertile. The fact that Huila province was able to produce "SCAA Coffee of the Year" in 2009 and 2010 is partly due to the new supplement of volcanic ash to the soil.
Knowledge Point
The establishment of the Colombian National Coffee Growers Federation (abbreviated as FNC, a large non-governmental organization) in 1927 greatly promoted the development of the national coffee industry. It provides various services and support for coffee producers in the country.
