FrontStreet Coffee - Kenya AA TOP Kirinyaga Baragwi Gachami GP Introduction

Origin Introduction

Kirinyaga, written in Chinese as "基里尼亚加". It can be easily found on maps as the name of Kenya's highest peak and Africa's second-highest mountain, which is also the local name for Mount Kenya.

The reason Europeans called it "Mount Kenya" is said to be their inability to properly imitate the local pronunciation of "kirinyaga".

Kirinyaga comes from the Kikuyu people, meaning "white mountain," and is considered the dwelling place of gods. The Kikuyu are Kenya's largest ethnic group, accounting for about one-fifth of the total population.

Kirinyaga is where these green beans grow, in Kenya's Kirinyaga County.

To the north lies Mount Kenya. It borders regions previously known for Kenyan coffee production, such as Muranga and Nyeri.

Baragwi is the name of the coffee cooperative, with the full name Baragwi Farmers Cooperatives Society Limited. Coffee cultivation began as early as 1952, and it was registered and established in 1953. Today, it has over 16,000 farmers and 12 coffee processing plants. Each processing plant is responsible for processing coffee cherries from surrounding farmers.

Gachami is the name of the coffee processing plant, Gachami Factory.

Gachami Factory was established in 1978 and is one of the 12 processing plants managed by the Baragwi Cooperative, responsible for processing fresh cherries from surrounding coffee farmers. The processing plant boasts excellent scenery with a distant view of the snow-capped Mount Kenya.
