FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe Natural Process Gedeb Introduction
Ethiopia is a country from Africa, characterized by poverty and drought. Due to geographical conditions, coffee beans are primarily processed using the natural (sun-dried) method. During the natural drying process, coffee fruit pulp typically remains completely attached to the coffee beans. When natural processing is done well, it results in prominent sweetness and full flavor, which has always been highly favored.
Gedeb Cooperative
Gedeb Cooperative is located in the Gedeo zone, south of the Gedeb area in the Yirgacheffe region. Gedeb Cooperative is affiliated with YCFCU (Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union). Originally part of the Woka Cooperative, it became independent in 2012 and evolved into the current Gedeb Cooperative. According to YCFCU's official website data, Gedeb Cooperative has 270 farmers cultivating coffee on 504 hectares of land. Gedeb Cooperative also holds Fair Trade certification and organic farming certification.
Gedeb Cooperative's coffee is grown at altitudes between 1900 and 2100 meters, with Heirloom varieties. The harvest period is from December to January of the following year. Most of the Gedeo zone where Gedeb Cooperative is located receives adequate rainfall during summer, with daytime temperatures between 21°C and 29°C, and nighttime temperatures between 9.8°C and 17°C.
Gedeb Cooperative is currently managed by the Roba family. The current operations managers are Kefyalew, Bekele, and Tesfaye. All three studied fields such as forestry, geography, population, environmental development, and management during their school years, which is a significant technical advantage for Gedeb Cooperative. The Roba family of Gedeb Cooperative believes that biodiversity contributes to sustainable environmental development, so Gedeb Cooperative adopts agroforestry planting patterns. In addition to coffee, many grain and fruit crops are also cultivated.
