FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Coffee Bean Roasting Levels
Different roasting times for coffee beans result in variations in both appearance and flavor of the final product. Typically, coffee roasting is divided into eight levels, with "Light Roast" being the least roasted and "Italian Roast" being the most heavily roasted, each offering distinct flavors:
Light Roast: Insufficient coffee aroma, with more prominent vanilla acidity, relatively rare in the market;
Cinnamon Roast: Higher acidity with slight fragrance, suitable for brewing American coffee;
Medium Roast: To some extent preserves the original flavor of coffee beans, with slightly higher acidity and some bitterness, suitable for brewing American coffee or blended coffee;
High Roast: Balanced acidity and bitterness, with heavier aroma and richer layered texture;
City Roast: The most popular roasting level among the general public, with lower acidity than "High Roast," often used for making French coffee;
Dark Roast: Heavier bitterness, lower acidity, full-bodied aroma with longer aftertaste, often used for making black coffee or iced coffee;
French Roast: Strong bitterness with light acidity, featuring smoky and chocolate aromas, intense flavor, mostly suitable for making Vienna coffee;
Italian Roast: Strong bitterness with almost no acidity, intense and complex flavor, with rich burnt taste, suitable for making espresso.
Knowledge Point: The intensity of acidity and bitterness is not inherently predetermined. Specific "flavors" are developed only after roasting at certain roasting levels.
