Why Is Blue Mountain Coffee So Famous? Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1 Coffee Price Incredibly Expensive
FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee
Is Blue Mountain No. 1 good? What exactly is Blue Mountain coffee?
Whether Blue Mountain tastes good is, in the end, subjective. If it tastes good to you, then it is good — one person's nectar is another's poison. Some drinkers finish their cup with a shrug; others fall in love and willingly pay a hefty price for the next bag.
So don't get hung up on other people's verdicts. What matters is whether you can genuinely feel the charm in each coffee. That said, there is no disputing that the special climate and soil of high mountain zones directly shape coffee quality, and they are what give Blue Mountain its unrivaled flavor and balance. "Existence has meaning," as the saying goes. Still, it must be admitted that the price of Blue Mountain No. 1 — climbing into the thousands of yuan — is beyond what most people would ever imagine spending on coffee.
What exactly is Blue Mountain coffee?
Strictly speaking:
Coffee grown at 910-1700m is called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.
Coffee grown at 460-910m is called Jamaica High Mountain Coffee.
Coffee grown below 460m is called Jamaica Prime Coffee.
Above 1700m lies a forest protection area where no coffee is cultivated.
To guarantee quality, Jamaica's CIB (Coffee Industry Board) enforces a strict set of rules:
- Clearly defined production areas;
- Cultivation limited to the Arabica Typica variety;
- Training for coffee farmers (cultivation techniques, harvesting and processing skills, environmental protection, and more);
- Strict processing discipline (insisting on hand-picking only fully ripe red cherries; using the washed method; controlling drying conditions to hit a target moisture content of 12%).
Flavor Profile
A balanced combination of acidity, bitterness, sweetness, and richness — no single note ever dominating.
Knowledge Point
The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board samples every single batch of exported beans. From each sample, three cups are roasted, ground and brewed, then tasted by senior cuppers following standard procedures. Only if at least two of the three cups pass can the batch be certified as genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.
FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation
FrontStreet's Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1 comes from the historic Clifton Estate, which has cultivated coffee since around 1750 at an average altitude of 4,300 feet (about 1,310 meters). It ships in the traditional 15, 45 and 70 kg wooden barrels that double as proof of authenticity, and it is roasted medium-dark to order so the beans arrive at their flavor peak within 5 days.
For brewing, FrontStreet recommends a Kono dripper, a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, water at 87–88°C, and a grind slightly coarser than for light roasts — about the texture of white sugar — with beans rested 4-7 days from roast date. Expect a clean, gentle cup where hazelnut, cream, chocolate and caramel unfold in perfect balance, with only a moderate, pleasant acidity and a lasting fruity finish.
