Elida Estate
The history of this farm can be traced back to 1918. This farm is owned by the Lamastus family, and the farm's name Elida comes from the name of the farm owner Robert Louis Lamastus's wife at that time.
Elida Estate is located in the Alto Quiel region of Boquete, with an average altitude of 1670-1825 meters. The estate's altitude is almost the highest in the entire country of Panama, making it a rare ultra-high altitude estate in Central America! Part of the estate is located within Panama's Volcan Baru National Park. Today, the estate is managed by owner Wilford Lamastus. Elida Estate has become an internationally renowned estate and has become a regular annual procurement destination for many third-wave coffee companies in Europe and America. They are also perennial winners at Best of Panama, having won first place in different categories of BOP multiple times. In this year's 2016 BOP, they won first place in the washed Geisha category.
The total area of Elida Estate is 65 hectares, with more than half located within the Baru Volcano National Park. Thirty hectares of the estate are planted with coffee trees, while the remaining 35 hectares are pristine forest. Coffee is grown at altitudes ranging from 1670 to 1850 meters, making it one of the two highest altitude coffee estates in Panama.
The rugged Baru is a young volcano with an altitude exceeding 3,400 meters. It is an active volcano with seven different microclimate zones in its vicinity, creating a rich and diverse ecological environment. Elida Estate spans across these zones, and the diverse microclimates have both advantages and disadvantages for coffee cultivation. For Elida, its coffee flavors are more intense and have richer, more varied aromas compared to most Panamanian coffees. Of course, the ultra-high altitude terrain also has drawbacks. Due to the large temperature difference between morning and evening, coffee at Elida Estate requires 5 years of care after planting before the first harvest can be realized - a rather long waiting period (coffee in most producing regions only takes 3 years). Although plant growth is slower, it is very beneficial for the development of coffee flavors.
