FrontStreet Coffee - Panama Elida Estate Natural Typica Introduction
Panama's Elida Estate is located in the renowned specialty coffee producing region of Boquete, Panama. The estate covers a total area of 65 hectares, with more than half situated within the Baru Volcano National Park. Only 30 hectares of the estate are used for cultivating coffee trees, while the remainder remains pristine primary forest. The coffee is grown at altitudes ranging from 1,670 to 1,850 meters, making it one of the two highest-altitude estates in Panama (the other being Carmen Estate, located on Volcan Baru).
It is precisely in such high-altitude environments that low temperatures cause delayed maturation of coffee cherries - about a full month later than normal maturity periods. The fertile volcanic soil provides abundant nutrients for the coffee, and combined with the excellent microclimate created by the volcano, enables Elida Estate to consistently achieve outstanding results in cupping competitions.
Elida Estate is the most renowned estate of the Lamastus family, established in 1918. From the time Robert Lamastus, the founder of the Lamastus family's coffee estate, planted the first coffee tree, it has now passed through a century and witnessed the worldwide popularization of specialty coffee.
It is the oldest coffee estate in Panama's history and one of the highest-altitude estates in the Boquete region, cultivating Geisha at ultra-high altitudes (2,050m). Not only has it won multiple BOP championships, but it also holds the BOP cupping score record (in 2018, Elida Green Top Natural Geisha scored an exceptional 94.66, breaking the 2016 BOP Elida Green Top Natural Geisha record of 94.15).
In addition to the exceptional ultra-high altitude and microclimate, estate owner Mr. Wilford has put considerable effort into harvesting and processing. To achieve the highest standards, Elida Estate's coffee is only allowed to be hand-picked from the most ripe coffee cherries (Ripe on Pinton). The high maturity of the fruit naturally results in higher sugar content in the mucilage, which is the foundation for producing Elida's premium flavor profile.
