Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee - Panama Santa Teresa Estate Natural Typica

The Republic of Panama is located on the Central American isthmus, connecting Colombia to the east, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south, Costa Rica to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the north. The country's S-shaped territory connects North and South America, with Panama extending 772 kilometers in length and varying between 60 to 177 kilometers in width. The coastline stretches 2,988 kilometers, while the land border extends 555 kilometers. Geographically, Panama is situated between latitude 7° to 10° North and longitude 77° to 83° West.

The microclimates of Panama's highlands are the most crucial resource that makes Panama's specialty coffee truly unique. The environment from east to west across Panama allows cold air currents to converge above 6,500 feet in the central mountain range. This creates various microclimates in the Boquete and Volcán-Candela regions of Chiriquí Province, making them the primary production areas for Panama's specialty coffee. These distinctive coffees are cultivated in the nutrient-rich, balanced soils of the Barú Volcano region.

The appropriate microclimates, soil conditions, temperature, and altitude of these highlands are suitable for the sowing, cultivation, and harvesting of various specialty coffees. In addition to Boquete and Volcán, other notable regions include Santa Clara (the origin of the beans we're sharing with you today), Candel, Renacimiento, and others. Other areas include the David, Remacimeinto, Bugaba, and Tole districts.

The estate is managed by Juan Pablo Berard and his daughter Maria Luisia, who jointly operate this 100-hectare coffee farm, preserving 25 hectares as primary forest to serve as a habitat for flora and fauna. The coffee varieties grown include Caturra, Catuai, and Geisha. This estate has received numerous awards and is also dedicated to education. Juan Pablo has built school facilities, providing books and meals, contributing to local educational development. Although the plantation area is not extensive, it is well-equipped with its own processing plant, capable of handling everything from berry to bag. Most employees are local residents from the border areas and are well cared for by the estate owners.

Finca Santa Teresa (FST) is located in a high-altitude area, blessed with rich black volcanic soil and nourished by the climatic influences of both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. These advantages contribute to the production of premium coffee. Situated amidst beautiful valleys and ridges, Santa Teresa enjoys diverse microclimates, which gives each micro-batch of specialty green coffee beans its distinct personality.
