FrontStreet Coffee - Pour-over Coffee Equipment and Grind Size Introduction

Each coffee brewing method has its own suitable grind size, so grinding isn't something we can do arbitrarily according to our preferences. As mentioned in the previous drip coffee brewing method, coffee grounds that are too coarse or too fine are both unsuitable, meaning the most appropriate grind size is medium to medium-coarse.

Relationship Between Coffee Grind Size and Extraction Methods:

1. Suitable for Fine Grinding: Turkish ibrik, Moka pot, espresso machine.

2. Suitable for Medium Grinding: Paper drip method, flannel drip method, siphon pot (also known as vacuum pot).

3. Suitable for Coarse Grinding: Cold drip coffee maker, drip pot.

Four Basic Principles of Good Grinding:

1. Choose the appropriate grind size for your brewing method.

2. Keep the temperature low during grinding.

3. Ensure uniform particle size after grinding.

4. Grind only right before brewing.

Regardless of what type of grinder you use, friction inevitably generates heat during operation. However, most beneficial substances are highly volatile, and the heat from grinding accelerates the rate of evaporation, causing the aromatic compounds to dissipate into the air prematurely.

After coffee beans are ground, their cell walls completely break down, which significantly increases the surface area exposed to air. All protective layers that preserve freshness are completely removed, accelerating oxidation and deterioration. Coffee can lose its flavor within 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee strongly recommends: don't buy ground coffee; it's best to buy coffee beans and grind them right before brewing, and brew immediately after grinding.

Essential Pour-over Equipment:

1. Coffee grinder
2. Digital scale
3. Drip cone
4. Pour-over kettle
5. Thermometer/timer

Knowledge Point: When selecting a digital scale, choose one that can accurately measure coffee beans to 0.1 gram precision.
