Panama is the southernmost country in Central America, bordering Colombia and Costa Rica, connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Its famous engineering project, the Panama Canal, connects the two oceans, earning it the title of "world bridge." The terrain throughout Panama is undulating with numerous valleys and rivers. Apart from the coastal plains in the north and south, most of the country consists of mountains, with volcanoes providing nutrients for coffee.

Panama is close to the equator and has a tropical marine climate. It is humid during the day and cool at night, with an average annual temperature of 23-27°C. The year is divided into dry and rainy seasons, with an average annual precipitation of 1500-2500 millimeters. These exceptional conditions provide an excellent growing environment for coffee. The special geographical location and unique climate environment have made it an ideal place for growing specialty coffee and have contributed to its extremely distinctive flavor profile. With notes of orange and citrus fruit, lychee, cantaloupe, and grapes offering subtle acidity and sweetness, along with the caramel aroma of roasted sweet potatoes, the flavor is rich and full-bodied, bright and clean, leaving an endless aftertaste.

Panama's coffee history originated in the early 19th century when a retired British naval colonel began planting coffee in the Boquete Valley. Later, colonists introduced coffee cultivation to the western mountains. However, Panama's coffee was not outstanding in quality from the beginning. For a long time, it was inferior to that of neighboring Costa Rica, and its coffee production was only one-tenth of Costa Rica's.

By 1989, with the end of the International Coffee Agreement, Panama's coffee industry reflected on its situation. Subsequently, seven famous Panamanian coffee estates established the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP). In 1996, Panama began hosting green bean competitions and online green bean auctions (BOP), aiming to organize small-scale coffee growers nationwide to jointly promote the Panama coffee brand and improve their coffee quality through healthy competition.

Panama's Crown Jewel - Geisha Coffee

Panama's current success in coffee cannot be separated from its high-quality coffee growing environment, well-educated coffee farmers, and excellent Geisha coffee varieties. Most of Panama's earliest coffee growers were Western immigrants, primarily engineers and managers who had worked on the Panama Canal. Their successors mostly have American university educational backgrounds and possess substantial knowledge reserves. It is precisely because of this background that Panama's scientific coffee management has always been at the forefront of the industry.

Although Panama is a small country and a coffee-producing nation, its per capita income is over $14,000, ranking around 50th in the world, significantly higher than China's domestic per capita income of over $8,000. Of course, this can also be seen from the local Geisha auctions in Panama.

Knowledge point: Because the pinyin of GEISHA COFFEE is the same as the Japanese word for geisha, many people are accustomed to calling it "Geisha Coffee," but it has no connection to Japan whatsoever. Therefore, some people directly translate it as "Geisha Coffee" based on its phonetic pronunciation. Premium coffees are suitable for light to light-medium roasting (AGTRON 69-60) to preserve their special and charming flavors.
