FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombian Coffee
Colombia's flowers, coffee, gold, and emeralds are known as the "Four Treasures" of Colombia.
Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia is the world's third-largest coffee producer and exporter (after Brazil and Vietnam), and is the world's largest exporter of Arabica coffee beans. Colombian coffee is also one of the few specialty coffees sold internationally under the country's name.
Colombia borders Brazil, the largest coffee-producing country, to the southeast and Panama to the northwest. We know that Panama is famous for Geisha, with the world's best Geisha varieties grown there, which explains why Colombian coffee is synonymous with high-quality coffee. Over two million people in Colombia depend on coffee production for their livelihood, accounting for nearly a quarter of the domestic job market. Coffee is an extremely important economic crop!
Colombia's main coffee-producing regions are distributed along three "river-shaped" Andes mountain ranges that run north-south. Coffee is cultivated in the highlands along these mountain ranges. The unique microclimate, combined with low latitude, high altitude, and volcanic soil, creates ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee.
Commercial coffee bean production is concentrated in central and northern Colombia, mostly on large, corporate coffee farms. Among these, the well-known "MAM" three major producing regions are Medellín, Armenia, and Manizales, which mainly produce the familiar Central American flavor profile with strong fruity acidity. However, the Bucaramanga coffee produced in the Santander province in the northeast is known for its low acidity and strong bitter aroma, somewhat similar to Indonesia's Mandheling. This phenomenon may be due to the lower altitude, which reduces its acidity.
Specialty coffee bean production is mainly concentrated in the south, at altitudes above 1,500 meters, with numerous volcanoes that have created many famous specialty-producing regions, including Cauca, Huila, Meta, Tolima, and Nariño provinces. The main flavor profile features caramel aroma with delicate berry notes and fruity acidity, and noticeable sweetness!
Most Colombian coffee is processed using the washed method, and specialty coffees are mostly produced on small to medium-sized self-operated farms. Compared to Brazil's large-scale cultivation, coffee from small farms typically offers superior quality.
Knowledge Point
Coffee bags are always marked with "Excelso-Café de Colombia." Whether it's EP, SUPREMO, or UGQ, as long as the coffee meets Colombia's export standards, the bags will be labeled "Excelso."
