FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is coffee brewed from coffee beans grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Pure Blue Mountain Coffee is extremely rare.
Jamaica's Blue Mountains are the highest mountains in the western Caribbean Sea (2,256 meters high) and the highest peak in the Caribbean region. Located in the coffee belt, this area has fertile volcanic soil, fresh air without pollution, humid climate, and is foggy and rainy throughout the year (average rainfall of 1,980 mm, temperature around 27°C). Such climate conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, which is the most expensive coffee in the world after Kopi Luwak.
In 1717, French King Louis XV ordered the cultivation of coffee in Jamaica. In the mid-1720s, Jamaica's Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes imported Arabica seeds from Martinique and began promoting cultivation in the St. Andrew area. In 1932, coffee production reached its peak, with harvests exceeding 15,000 tons. Coffee production, like general agricultural products, is greatly affected by weather conditions. In 1969, Jamaica's Blue Mountain Coffee was affected by hurricanes and production fell into difficulties. Japan's UCC company provided assistance, introducing ecological cultivation methods.
To express gratitude for the Japanese company's assistance, Jamaica signed a contract with Japan in 1972, providing 90% of the annual production to the Japanese market. The remaining 10% (about 3,500 barrels of 70kg oak barrels) is released to the market for sale (also the only coffee that retains oak barrel packaging). This makes Blue Mountain Coffee extremely scarce in the market, establishing its dominant position in the coffee market.
Jamaican Blue Mountain region coffee has three grades: Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans, and Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans. Among them, Blue Mountain Coffee and High Mountain Coffee are each divided into two grades. From top to bottom in terms of quality: Blue Mountain No. 1, Blue Mountain No. 2, High Mountain No. 1, High Mountain No. 2, and Jamaica Prime Coffee. Typically, only coffee grown at altitudes up to 1,600 meters is called Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee grown between altitudes of 274 to 457 meters is usually called Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans. In terms of price, Blue Mountain Coffee is several times more expensive than High Mountain Coffee. Mainly distributed across five peaks: John Crow, St. John's Peak, Mossman's Peak, High Peak, and Blue Mountain Peak.
Blue Mountain Coffee originates from Jamaica, named after the Blue Mountains surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. Its acidity, sweetness, and bitterness are well-balanced, with excellent flavor and aroma. It is suitable for single-origin coffee and recommended for medium roasting. In the early years domestically, what people drank was basically fake Blue Mountain Coffee, yet it could sell for over 100 yuan. Nowadays, there are many authentic Blue Mountain coffees available domestically, though prices remain expensive. A cup of real Blue Mountain at FrontStreet Coffee costs 60 yuan, and it's the highest quality grade.
Knowledge Point: The coffee variety of Jamaican Blue Mountain is one of the oldest varieties - Typica.
