When it comes to coffee, many people's first impression is that it is either bitter or sour. Some coffees, though, are neither—they taste relatively moderate. But have you ever heard that Blue Mountain coffee is sweet? Mention FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain coffee and many friends will say it is very expensive, so they haven't tried it and don't know what it tastes like; others will say it tastes excellent.

FrontStreet Coffee will tell you what its Blue Mountain coffee tastes like: a very rich, smooth coffee with excellent balance and typically low acidity, and a sweet aftertaste that lingers.

Why Are Blue Mountain Coffee Beans So Expensive?

There are many Blue Mountain coffees on the market, but do they all taste the same? FrontStreet Coffee reminds everyone that plenty of coffees carry the Blue Mountain name, yet not all of them are Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee—because genuine Blue Mountain coffee is produced in limited quantities. Genuine Blue Mountain is one of the coffees grown under the most superior conditions in the world, requiring weather, geological structure, and terrain to combine into a uniquely ideal location. Its growing environment, variety, yield, strict picking requirements, large beans, and high quality all contribute to its price, and it earns that price.

The Growing Altitude of Blue Mountain Coffee

Everyone knows coffee grown at higher altitudes is better, and the highest growing altitude for Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is 2256 meters, the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination. The origin of the Blue Mountains name is fascinating too: the range lies in the eastern part of Jamaica, and because it is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, whenever the weather is clear and the sun shines directly on the azure water, the peak mirrors the brilliant blue light of the sea, hence the name.

The area sits in the coffee belt, with fertile volcanic soil, fresh unpolluted air, a humid climate, and year-round fog and rain. It is precisely this climate that creates the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, and the world's highest-priced coffee.

The harvest is extremely difficult. All the trees grow on rugged, uneven mountain slopes, and the coffee is picked almost entirely by local women, since non-local pickers simply cannot manage the work. There are strict requirements for the cherries as well: only perfectly ripe beans may be selected, since underripe or overripe beans lower the quality.

Jamaican Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee

Blue Mountain coffee and High Mountain coffee are each divided into four grades. From top to bottom in quality, they are NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and PB, where PB stands for Peaberry. Under CIB standards, only coffee grown at altitudes between 1000 and 1700 meters may be called Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. With low production, large beans, excellent quality, and a harmonious flavor that combines appropriate acidity, bitterness, aroma, richness, and sweetness, it is recognized worldwide as a supreme product. That is why the price of the national-treasure Blue Mountain No.1 is the highest of all Blue Mountain coffees.

The Variety of Blue Mountain Coffee

Coffee beans worldwide are mainly divided into three types: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain coffee is of the Typica variety. Typica is the oldest Arabica subspecies, with bronze-colored leaf tips and oval or slender-pointed beans. The tree is tall, with branches inclined at 50-70 degrees, which is why it is called red-topped coffee. Its opposite leaves are long-oval with smooth surfaces, and white flowers bloom at the base where the petiole meets the branch. It has an elegant flavor but is physically weak with poor disease resistance, and each tree yields very little. Mature coffee fruits look like cherries and turn bright red. Because Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has weak disease resistance, low yield, and susceptibility to insect attack, this is one of the reasons for its high price.

The FrontStreet Jamaican Blue Mountain No.1 coffee that FrontStreet Coffee sells carries a certificate issued by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board. In addition, the wooden barrels that pack Jamaican Blue Mountain beans bear a green frog logo. This is because FrontStreet Coffee specifically chose an estate for its Jamaican Blue Mountain No.1 that holds Rainforest Alliance certification, namely Clifton Mount Estate. Jamaica is also the only producing region that packs green beans in wooden barrels, and it has the most iconic Blue Mountain flavor. Real Blue Mountain is intensely aromatic, with a balanced mouthfeel and no single flavor too prominent or lacking. Authentic FrontStreet Jamaican Blue Mountain No.1 costs more than other coffees, and FrontStreet Coffee believes the main reasons are three: limited quantity, excellent flavor, and strict quality control, which together create the world's highest-priced coffee.

How Much Does a Cup of FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain Coffee Cost?

Speaking of Blue Mountain coffee, many people assume it is very expensive. So how much does a cup actually cost? At FrontStreet Coffee, a cup of genuine Blue Mountain coffee costs only 60 yuan, delivering an excellent experience. The most beloved trait of FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain coffee is its subtle fragrance and light sweetness with minimal bitterness. The fruity aroma spreads on entry, followed by cocoa and nutty flavors that carry sweetness and aftertaste.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

To experience Blue Mountain at its best, choose FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1, sourced from the historic Clifton Mount Estate, which holds Rainforest Alliance certification. Grown and processed at an average of 4,300 feet (1,310.64 meters) and roasted medium-dark, it reveals creamy, caramel, chocolate, and nutty notes over a soft sweetness, with acidity, sweetness, and bitterness in balance.

Brew it with a Kono dripper, 15g of coffee at a 1:15 ratio and water at 87-88°C, using a white-sugar grind. A three-stage pour of 30/120/225g yields a clean, full-bodied, long-finishing cup.
