FrontStreet Coffee - Gayo Mandheling Crown Series: Black Crown Introduction

Aceh Province, Sumatra

Aceh is located at the northwesternmost tip of the Indonesian archipelago. Situated on both sides of the equator, it features a typical tropical equatorial maritime climate. It remains hot year-round, resembling summer, with an average annual temperature of around 27°C. Between October and March each year, influenced by Asian and Pacific air currents, it's Indonesia's rainy season. From April to October, affected by the continental air currents from Australia, there's less moisture brought by the air currents, making the climate hot and dry—this is the local dry season. Due to the distinct climate factors of dry and rainy seasons, coffee harvesting always falls during the rainy season, from October to March each year. After harvesting and processing, the coffee is then sun-dried during the dry season.

Crown Series

In Gayo, Bener Meriah Regency is known as the heartland and soul of Sumatran coffee, and the Crown Mandheling series is produced through collaboration between local cooperatives and farmers. In terms of coffee varieties, Bourbon and Super Adenica are used, with Super Adenica achieving the highest score of 88.84 in the COE pilot program competition organized by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE).

These three Crown Series coffees utilize natural and honey processing methods. Notably, in Indonesian Mandheling coffee, the more common practice is typically wet-hulled processing. Natural processing is not commonly used or seen in Sumatra, especially in the perpetually humid Gayo highlands, where there are only a few hours of sunlight each day, making sun-drying much more challenging. The honey processing method, which preserves the mucilage for sun-drying, is even more labor-intensive and expensive compared to other processing methods, requiring longer sun-drying time on raised beds.

To overcome this difficulty, cooperatives and farmers, after many trials, finally found a suitable sun-drying method—building raised beds and covering them with transparent thin paper for sun-drying. This approach accelerates drying and better ensures the quality of green coffee beans during processing. Thanks to the efforts of farmers and cooperatives, we can offer this unique and exquisite Gayo natural coffee.
