In Portuguese, "Ouro Verde" means Green Gold. Ouro Verde Estate sits in Bahia, Brazil, on the Atlantic side of the country. When you arrive and see the landmark Salvador, don't rush to think you've ended up in El Salvador in Central America—Brazil's Salvador is a coastal city whose full name is São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos. The estate itself lies further inland, in the Chapada Diamantina region, at an average altitude of about 1300 meters above sea level.

Bahia's climate is generally hot, but the high-altitude Chapada Diamantina region offers real advantages for growing: high elevation, large day-night temperature swings, a low average annual temperature, and fertile soil. The result is coffee with flavors distinct from other Brazilian regions—typically rich fruit, a smooth texture, lingering sweetness, and even some floral notes.

In the 2009 Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition, coffees from Bahia went head-to-head with those from the traditional powerhouse of Minas Gerais (MG), and four of the top ten came from Bahia.
