FrontStreet Coffee - Golden Mandheling Coffee Introduction

Golden Mandheling enjoys a prestigious reputation in the coffee world, originating from the Lake Toba mountain region of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Exclusively distributed by Pawani Company, Golden Mandheling represents the finest quality among Mandheling coffees. The green beans undergo three meticulous rounds of manual selection and refined processing. We roast these beans using our Lanshan light roast method (approximately City Roast), which not only preserves the rich, wild aroma characteristic of Mandheling coffee but also reveals exceptional body and pure flavor with an added touch of elegance—truly a rare coffee treasure!

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation centered around the equator, composed of numerous large and small islands. It ranks third globally in coffee production, with most being Robusta varieties. Arabica varieties are also cultivated on Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra islands. Particularly, Mandheling coffee from Sumatra can be considered representative of Indonesian coffee, with GRADE 1 being the supreme quality featuring the fewest defective beans.

The Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company originates from the GAYO region in northern Sumatra, at elevations of 1,300-1,700 meters, and undergoes three manual selections. Broadly speaking, Golden Mandheling primarily uses the Ateng variety within the Arabica species, one of the world's top ten specialty coffee tree varieties. The word "Ateng" means "dwarf" in Indonesian—not because this tree variety is naturally short, but to facilitate berry harvesting. When the tree reaches about 155 centimeters in height, farmers bend it down and apply a layer of white coating, causing the branches to droop like willow branches.

Golden Mandheling has been trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company. PWN represents Golden Mandheling in its truest sense, and Golden Mandheling bearing the PWN imprint serves as a quality guarantee. In other words, only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered genuine "Golden Mandheling."

The coffee cherries are processed using the wet-hulled method, naturally sun-dried, and undergo another refined drying process after hulling. Following this, there are two additional green bean cleaning stages and four manual selection processes.

Under such rigorous management, Golden Mandheling beans display uniform appearance with rich, bright flavor and intensified caramel sweetness, while eliminating less favorable herbal and earthy notes. Consequently, PWN has become synonymous with "quality" Mandheling.

Knowledge Point

Mandheling coffee beans are relatively large and hard in texture, making them prone to defects during cultivation. Therefore, they typically undergo strict manual selection after harvesting.
