FrontStreet Coffee's Premium Sumatra Coffee Introduction
In the 17th century, the Dutch introduced Arabica seedlings to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Indonesia. In 1877, a massive disaster struck the Indonesian islands. Coffee rust disease destroyed nearly all coffee trees, forcing people to abandon the Arabica they had cultivated for years and introduce Robusta coffee trees from Africa, which had stronger disease resistance.
Today, Indonesia is a major coffee-producing country. Coffee production is mainly concentrated in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, with Robusta varieties accounting for 90% of total production. However, Sumatra Mandheling is a rare Arabica variety. These trees are grown on hillside slopes at altitudes between 750 and 1,500 meters. The mysterious and unique Sumatra region imparts Mandheling coffee with rich aroma, full-bodied texture, and intense flavor, giving it distinctive notes of subtle chocolate and syrup.
Mandheling coffee is considered one of the mellowest coffees in the world. When tasting Mandheling, you can distinctly feel the smoothness on your tongue. It also has lower acidity, but this acidity is still clearly perceptible. The lively micro-acidity mixed with the richest aromas allows you to easily experience the vibrant elements within its gentle richness. Additionally, this coffee has a faint earthy fragrance that some describe as the aroma of herbal plants.
The most famous origins for Asian coffee are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra Island, Java Island, and Kalimantan Island. Among these, the Sumatra Mandheling coffee produced on Indonesia's Sumatra Island enjoys the highest reputation. It has two famous varieties: Sumatra Mandheling DP Grade 1 and Premium Sumatra Mandheling. Sumatra Mandheling DP Grade 1 has a long aftertaste with a wild fragrance - the distinctive earthy flavor unique to primeval forests. In fact, the mellowness of Mandheling presents a very masculine character.
High-quality Grade 1 Mandheling coffee has very light acidity, like the subtle tartness of flowers and fruits. Besides the characteristic mellow flavor of Indonesian coffee, it also has a taste that is bitter yet sweet, deeply loved by those who enjoy dark roast coffee. Premium Sumatra Mandheling coffee is called "Premium" because it is stored in cellars for three years before export. However, premium coffee is by no means stale coffee, but rather specially processed, slightly pale coffee. This coffee is richer, with reduced acidity but increased body, longer aftertaste, and strong spice notes - sometimes piquant, sometimes walnut-like, and sometimes chocolatey.
By no means stale coffee beans, premium coffee allows raw beans to be stored in cellars at their origin for at least three years, with owners regularly turning them to ensure exposure to air and moisture. The baptism of time mellows the acidity of Mandheling coffee while enhancing its body. At this point, the coffee's flavor becomes more rounded and sweeter, with a longer aftertaste. Europeans extremely love aged Mandheling, just as Chinese people extremely love Pu'er tea - the phrase "elf collecting time" can also be used to describe aged Mandheling.
Knowledge point: Mandheling coffee beans are relatively large and hard in texture, prone to defects during cultivation. Therefore, they typically undergo strict manual sorting after harvesting.
