FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama La Esmeralda Grading
Geisha coffee beans can be said to be the most well-known and most expensive coffee bean variety in recent years! The origin of this fame dates back to Panama's specialty coffee. As early as before 2004, Panama's specialty coffee was not taken seriously by the international coffee industry. However, after 2004, when "Geisha coffee" was discovered and became famous, it repeatedly won championships in the Panama National Treasure Bean Cupping Competition, dominating the field.
Because the flavor of the Geisha coffee variety is loved by many people, with its rich citrus aroma, jasmine floral notes, almond and mango flavors, sweet nectar fragrance, and bright, complex fruit acidity, major coffee-producing countries have been competing to cultivate it.
But even with the same coffee variety, the flavor can be vastly different in different coffee growing environments!
Each region's unique climate, growing altitude, humidity, daylight length, soil, growers, and even the entire processing method after coffee cherry harvesting will seriously affect the coffee flavor! For example, Geisha from Panama, Colombia, Ethiopia, and other regions all have distinctly different coffee flavors.
La Esmeralda Estate
La Esmeralda Estate is the estate originally owned by the Peterson family mentioned earlier. After testing locally, they found that Geisha coffee grown at altitudes above 1400 meters had the best flavor. Therefore, they use a method of "primarily altitude, supplemented by cupping" to distinguish between Red Label, Green Label, and Blue Label Geisha coffee beans.
Red Label has the best quality, all are auction beans, grown at altitudes of 1600-1800 meters, and can only be purchased through global auctions.
Green Label is not an auction bean, but its altitude and quality are close to Red Label.
Blue Label is also not an auction bean, with even lower altitude of about 1500 meters.
Knowledge Extension
Geisha has full sweetness, an extremely clean taste, and rich aromas that extend from berries and citrus to mango, papaya, and peach flavors.
