FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Arabica and Caturra Coffee
Currently, the most widely cultivated coffee species in the world is Coffea Arabica, which covers approximately 70% of the global coffee market. It is the oldest and most traditional coffee variety, originally originating from Ethiopia in Africa. It became popular throughout the Arab world, later spread to Europe through the Ottoman Empire, and eventually reached the American continent through European colonial expansion, ultimately spreading worldwide.
Compared to other coffee species, Arabica beans have a more intense aroma, a relatively smooth mouthfeel, and sometimes carry a sweet aftertaste with acidity. Among the three different coffee species, its flavor is the most distinctive, making it widely favored by coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
Caturra Variety
Caturra is a mutant variety of Bourbon. It was first discovered in Brazil and began commercial cultivation in Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1937. In terms of flavor, it carries lemon or citrus acidity. In sweetness, it doesn't match Typica and Bourbon because Caturra's sweetness depends on the frequency and dosage of fertilization by growers. It has high productivity, but to maintain this productivity, continuous fertilization and pruning are required, resulting in short trees with many branches. Although productivity has increased, because the harvest period takes 2 years and maintenance costs are relatively high, production is still somewhat limited. Bourbon is a genetic mutant of Arabica.
Caturra is a dwarf variety with average yield, average quality, and average bean size. WCR also refers to average yield as "Caturra-like yield." It is susceptible to leaf rust and pests, typically grown in Brazil and Latin America. I mention this variety because it is very common in the market.
Knowledge Extension: Arabica coffee bean varieties originally come from Ethiopia, Yemen, and other parts of Africa, and were later transplanted to various parts of the world.
