FrontStreet Coffee - 90+ Geisha Estate Baru Volcanic Geisha Pearl White Introduction

90+ Geisha Estate Baru Volcanic Geisha Pearl White is a renowned single-origin coffee bean.

The Baru Volcanic series is the most approachable yet flavor-packed tier of the 90+ lineup, and it has long been a bestseller. The 90+ lots are made available exclusively by subscription to selected key purchasing partners. Last year, both the natural-process batch and the honey-process batch earned impressive 94-point scores from Coffee Review.

This year, 90+ has presented Baru Volcanic under a fresh concept. "Pearl White" echoes the character of this lot — fresh, elegant white flowers and orange blossoms — through its pure-white imagery. An American roaster submitted it for evaluation and achieved an exceptional 96 points from Coffee Review. Notably, with December having arrived: Coffee Review has adopted stricter scoring standards in recent years, which makes 96 points the highest score of 2018.

In December 2018, Pearl White earned that high score of 96 from Coffee Review. True to its name, Pearl White offers an elegant profile — white flowers, orange blossoms, and bergamot that grow more pronounced as the cup cools — carried on honey aromatics, reminiscent of drinking a fresh Earl Grey milk tea.

Geisha, a subspecies of arabica, features rich jasmine florals, light lemon acidity, and flavors of roasted sweet potato, bergamot, and white grape — exceptionally distinctive, and held in the highest esteem by the specialty coffee community in recent years.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Geisha's fame traces back to Panama, where in 2003 the Esmeralda estate's owner sent his lot to the Best of Panama competition — and stunned the judges, taking the crown with an average cupping score of 94.6 that broke the competition's records. Since then Geisha has been the champion bean the world chases, though its low yields, weak disease resistance, and demanding cultivation keep prices high. To taste the legend without overspending, it pays to know the tiers.

At the top sit FrontStreet Coffee's Esmeralda Red Label (Esmeralda Special) and Green Label (Private Collection). The Red Label grows at 1,600–1,800 meters, must cup above 90 points per batch, and each batch carries its own lot number sourced entirely from a single micro-plot — for example, FrontStreet Coffee's Red Label comes from the Harrimiao (Jarimia) plot. The Green Label blends batches across multiple high-altitude plots to express the estate's signature Geisha character rather than individual terroir, which makes it the more affordable of the two. For a first taste of the fabled "Geisha flavor," FrontStreet Coffee suggests the entry-level Panama Boquete Geisha: at a friendly price you get the classic orange-blossom honey character, oolong-tea body, delicate fruit acidity, and distinct layers.

Ethiopia, Geisha's birthplace, offers its own expressions. The Granja (Genlana) Estate Gesha, from a processing station founded in 2014 in Kochere near the Genlana Abaya area — 700 hectares of mostly uncultivated, fertile, shaded land — is natural-processed on raised beds for 14–20 days depending on weather, then roasted light-to-medium: bright citrus acidity, elegant ginger-flower aromatics, full ripe-fruit sweetness, and Geisha's signature refined finish. For estate-level Ethiopian Geisha, FrontStreet Coffee recommends Geisha Village's Gold Label (Geisha 1931, 10% of production, refined natural) and Red Label (Gori Gesha, 15% of production, SCA 88+), from the large estate beside the original Geisha forest.

Brewing Geisha from FrontStreet Coffee: use a coarse-medium grind with 78% pass-through on a Chinese #20 sieve (about fine-granulated-sugar texture), water at 91°C, 15g of coffee in a small Hario V60 at a 1:16 ratio. Brew in three pours: bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, pour to 125g, then top up to 225g once the bed drains halfway — total extraction around 2'10"–2'20". For espresso, the medium-roast Granja Gesha SOE (20g dose, 1:2 ratio, 25 seconds, 40g yield) shows orange, nut, and blueberry as an americano, and a cream-cookie smoothness with milk.
